Organic Skincare can be Alcohol Free

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

I recently read a very interesting article on vivawoman.net entitled “Why can’t organic skincare be alcohol free?”  There were many comments and questions about whether some alcohols were milder and safer than others. I take it to mean that this topic is of interest. So I hope to explain this.

Organic plant & grain alcohols versus alcohol denat or ethyl alcohol

I have one question. When you drink too much organic wine, is the hangover different from when you drink non-organic wine? Most will answer no. The reason being is that the chemical composition is exactly the same for both types of alcohol. The organic may have no pesticide residues etc. but it still dehydrates you, still causes the same release of liver enzymes. It has the same effect as non-organic alcohol. This is exactly the same for the skin. All alcohol is drying.

Plant derived fatty alcohols explained

Fatty alcohols like ceteryl, cetyl, stearyl, benzyl and phenoxyethanol differ from the alcohols above only by having a fat component as well. Manufacturers will often tell you that these alcohols are derived from plant sources and some may even claim that these are derived from organic sources implying that they are safer. The origin may be natural and/or organic, but the chemicals that are used to convert that natural material into these alcohols do not meet organic standards. What’s the point in taking an organic material and treating it with chemicals?  The end result is similar to the synthetic ingredients that are used by mainstream cosmetic companies.

100% Alcohol Free organic skincare is available

Why tolerate this when it is possible to have organic skincare using no alcohol at all? Organic Apoteke has spent many years researching this and have developed products that are free of grain alcohols, synthetic alcohols as well as all the fatty alcohols. This must prove that it can be done. Products such as these are mild, non drying and great for sensitive skin.

A question for us consumers

Why are we debating about which alcohol is safer? We are just playing into the hands of the cosmetics manufacturers half truths. Why do this when there are truly alcohol free organic skincare products available.

Natural Skincare: Winter Skin Saviour – Natural, Organic Face Mask

Rejuvenating Face Mask - Certified organic, anti-aging face mask infused with natural peptides

Rejuvenating Face Mask - Certified organic, anti-aging face mask infused with natural peptides

According to Ayurvedic philosophy our bodies undergo changes as the seasons change. Autumn is more likely to cause a vata imbalance and in winter kapha imbalances are more pronounced. Needless to say our diets, lifestyle and skincare routines need to change in order to counter these imbalances.

Increased vata causes skin and all mucus membranes (in fact any part of the body exposed to the environment) to feel drier, tighter, itchy. As we progress into winter these symptoms become more pronounced. This results in dry, itchy throats with hacking cough. The body, if not assisted sets up its own mechanism to counteract this dryness by increasing mucus production. This increased mucus may cause a post nasal drip, collect in the sinuses or lungs and if conditions persist may become infected.

If we listen to our bodies and at the first sign of autumn and start taking the relevant precautions, many of the winter ails may never prevail. In autumn we need to decrease the amounts of salads and uncooked food and favour nutritious vegetable soups and broths brimming with nutrients. Have more nuts and seeds, as the vital essential fats in them, help nourish from inside out. And use high quality and effective natural skincare products to nourish from the outside in.

The natural skincare product you should not be without over the winter months is a Natural Face Mask. An organic, intensive and rejuvenating face mask is best.

  • Use one that is rich in nutritive oils and waxes such as Rosa damascena oil, coconut fat and shea butter.
  • It should also have a natural, rich emollient like pure, organic honey.
  • Choose a formulation that stimulates microcirculation, as circulation tends to become sluggish over the winter months.
  • Masks that have natural peptide complexes also give you great anti aging benefits.

You only need to use masks once or twice per week depending on your skin type and how effective and nourishing the organic face mask is. Ensure that you are maintaining your skins natural beauty with a good natural, organic skincare regime daily.

Organic Eye Cream: Eyebright – Euphrasia officinalis

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009
Eyebright - Euphrasia officinalis

Eyebright - Euphrasia officinalis found in Organic Apotekes' Rejuvenating Eye Cream

The botanical name Euphrasia comes from the Greek word euphrosyne, meaning gladness. This is also the word for the linnet, the story is that this bird was the first creature to discover the benefit of this herb in eye problems and gave this knowledge to humans. It has been used for eye diseases since the fourteenth century. Eyebright is a flowering herb and the part used in eye preparations is the leaf and stem.
This is the most useful remedy for soothing irritated, red or tired eyes. It does not get rid of infections but the other problems such as irritation due to smoke, air pollution or pollen should respond well. The main action is the anti-inflammatory and astringent effects over the surface of the eye.
As the skin of the eyelids are very thin, using an eye cream containing Euphrasia helps keep eyes, bright, clear and sparkling. Who can resist this?

Organic Eye Cream: Bilberry – Vaccinium myrtillus

Monday, November 2nd, 2009
Bilberry - Vaccinium myrtillus

Bilberry - Vaccinium myrtillus

Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are known by a very wide range of local names which include blaeberry, whortleberry, whinberry, myrtle blueberry and fraughan. The fruit is smaller than that of the blueberry and similar in taste. Bilberries are darker in color, and usually appear near black with a slight shade of blue.

Bilberries are extremely difficult to grow and are thus seldom cultivated. Fruits are mostly collected from wild plants growing on publicly accessible lands, notably Finland , Sweden , Norway, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, parts of England and northern parts of Russia.

As a deep blue fruit, bilberries contain high levels of anthocyanin pigments, which have been linked experimentally to lowered risk for several diseases, such as those of the heart and cardiovascular system, eyes and cancer (1,2,3).
Bilberries are mentioned in a popular story of World War II RAF pilots who consumed bilberry jam to sharpen vision for night missions. It is believed that by stimulating visual purple, bilberry improves vision, especially night vision.

Laboratory studies have provided evidence that bilberry consumption may inhibit or even reverse eye disorders such as macular degeneration (4).

Also known to be anti-inflammatory, have the ability to strengthen blood vessels, act as a vein tonic and contain Vitamin A. Bilberries’ is the perfect ingredient in an eye cream. Strengthening blood vessels and toning veins helps reduce dark circles and puffiness. Anti-inflammatory action helps reduce redness of the eyes and Vitamin A helps the skin cells stay healthy. Because of the thin skin of the eyelid, applying an eye cream containing bilberry to this area ensures it is easily absorbed and effective.

Argireline vs Natural, Organic Skincare

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Argireline, is the trade name for a synthetically derived peptide.  According to the Argeline website “Argireline works through a unique mechanism which relaxes facial tension leading to a reduction in superficial facial lines and wrinkles with regular use. Argireline has been shown to moderate excessive catecholamines release.” Refer to the following website for more details: http://www.centerchem.com/PDFs/Argireline%20NP%20Ed8Ds.pdf

Releasing catecholamines is not good news for your body. Catecholamines are compounds that serve as neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, adrenaline, and dopamine.  Just consider …

  • Epinephrine is a substance that prepares the body to handle emergencies such as cold, fatigue, and shock.
  • A deficiency of dopamine in the brain is responsible for the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.

Do you really want a cosmetic to inhibit your body’s neurotransmittors? What if you accidentally apply too much?

The manufacturers of Argireline claim that it works by relaxing facial muscles. Clients have found that these effects last for only a few hours.

Why subject yourself to a risky, temporary wrinkle fix when there are proven, safe and long-term wrinkle cures out there.

A natural peptide complex is a more credible alternative as it can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on an ongoing basis.

How does a natural peptide complex work?

Peptides are made up of amino acids. Amino acids are made by your body and supplied by your diet. Our body then supplies these amino acids to various organs and tissues within the body to support healthy function and build tissue.  As we age, our bodies become less efficient at supplying peptides to the skin, collagen begins to degenerate, causing wrinkles.

A natural peptide complex supplies the skin with peptides from fruit and vegetable sources to rejuvenate collagen and erases wrinkles. Just think of it as a supplement for your skin.  It is a safe solution that erases wrinkles, supports healthy skin and promotes overall well-being in the long-term.  Surely this has to be better than a risky, short-term fix provided by synthetic peptides?

Organic Apoteke produces an organic anti aging skincare range containing natural peptides. Get your highest dose of natural peptides from Rasayana Rejuvenating Serum.

Natural Skincare | Harness the Anti Aging Power of Herbs

Friday, October 30th, 2009

It is not easy to draw a dividing line between therapeutic herbs and nutrition. Many plants we eat as food have quite strong actions on the body. Chillies cause some people problems (heartburn), yet others crave them daily as they cause endorphin (happy hormone) release. Even tea and coffee can have very strong effects. Coffee with its high caffeine content wakes you up and may give you a boost of much needed energy whereas camomile tea may help you relax when stressed. We are all affected by the plants and herbs that we consume.

However when you use specific herbs and plants in correct quantities in skincare, you can harness them to have the most amazing results. Just look at these two examples:

  • A combination of lemon, grapefuit and arginine (amino acid) extracted from wheat can reduce sebum production, keeping skin healthy and matte.
  • A combination of rose oil, rosehip seed oil and amino acids extracted from beets and maize can have the most amazing skin firming and wrinkle- reducing results due to the anti-oxidants, nutrients and protein stimulating effects of the ingredients that work synergistically.

We know that natural, organic products are safe because most people in the world eat a range of plants every day. Our bodies are used to consuming them, absorbing what is beneficial to us and getting rid of the waste by-products. Given that there are millions of biochemical processes going on in our bodies all the time and that there are millions of substances in plants, it is only natural that many plants have constituents that have an effect on how our bodies work.

It’s important, however, to remember that some people are allergic to specific ingredients even if they are natural. So please do ensure that natural skincare products don’t contain plant material that you may be sensitive to.

Organic Apoteke produces a range of natural, organic skincare products including an anti aging skin care range.  All ingredients are from natural botanical and mineral sources.

Natural Skincare: Herbs or Chemicals?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

By the time the human race evolved about 150,000 years ago, plants had already been in existence for 400 million years. A great diversity had developed, yielding an enormous range of naturally produced chemical constituents. As civilization developed, people came to know which plants were good to eat and which were good to help against disease. Herbalism was the skill of using one’s knowledge of the properties of plants to improve the health of the person.

Herbal medicine was the only type of treatment available to people for thousands of years and it’s still the most easily-available form of treatment available in many parts of the world.

The best way to describe the herbalist approach is the phrase “the whole plant for the whole person”. Why the whole plant? Because the enormous range of and subtle combination of constituents in a plant will give it a unique action that cannot be duplicated by anything synthetic. Why the whole person? Because herbalists respect every patient as a unique individual and look for the cause of disease rather than just examining symptoms.

Natural, pure and organic skincare companies base their formulations on the above philosophy. Organic and natural herbal ingredients are used in quantities and formulations intended to support the whole body. At the forefront of the formulator’s mind is creating a product that is pure and safe for the entire organism.

Where’s the logic in using a product that makes your skin look great for a few months, but has the potential to cause cancer, or a multitude of other health conditions? Unfortunately when certain chemical ingredients are used in skincare, they are not tested for long enough. While the short-term results may be dramatic even amazing, the long term effects are found out years later. The ingredient is often then pulled out of the market; unfortunately it is too late for many people.

With natural and organic skincare we know the long term effects of the ingredients, as man and animals have been eating them for centuries. Companies like Organic Apoteke have formulated products using only natural and organic ingredients but also have the research to show that their products are just as effective as the chemical alternatives. Surely this is a win, win situation. Why wouldn’t you choose pure, safe and EFFECTIVE skincare over anything else?

How to find the Right Organic Facial Cleanser

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

CleanseWhy is a facial cleanser so important?
Consider the fact that the skin on your face is quite delicate, then think of everything it is subjected to: air pollution, chlorine (in most tap water), and the toxins from a variety of personal care products. All of these put a strain on the skin’s natural detoxification process. Our skin needs the support of a good facial cleanser to wash away impurities and stay balanced, healthy and beautiful.

How to choose the right cleanser for your skin?
Everyone’s skin is slightly different due to our genetics, our diet, our environment, and our hormone levels. Using the right cleanser for your current skin condition is a vital step in achieving luminous skin. Here are a few questions that will help you determine what your skin needs.

  • Does your skin feel tight after washing? The face wash or cleanser you are using is too dehydrating for your skin. You need to find a gentle cleanser. Look for ingredients such as rose oil, soy oil or shea butter (to nourish and protect your skin while cleansing).
  • Does your face feel oily 15 minutes after washing? You could be using the wrong cleanser, there are two possibilities: Your cleanser is too rich and not able to remove the excess sebum your skin is producing, or your cleanser is too harsh (drying) causing a your skin to produce excess oil. Look for ingredients such as arginine, and lemon oil which balance oiliness.
  • Is your skin dull after cleansing? You need a face wash or cleanser that gently exfoliates (no scrubbing please)! Look for ingredients such as pineapple enzymes, papaya enzymes or lactic acid (from organic dairy sources) to help remove dead and damaged skin cells revealing newer skin cells.
  • Does your skin have blemishes despite regular cleansing? Look for ingredients such as neem leaf extract and tea tree oil which are naturally antibacterial (also make sure you change your washcloth daily).

A fine balance
You might have to scrub other things to get them clean, but don’t take this approach with your skin. Be very gentle. Your skin has a protective “acid mantle” which  should be maintained, or restored (when needed) by using the right cleanser. You never want your cleanser to:

  • be harsh (avoid sodium laurel sulfate or other harsh surfactants), this can strip your skin of the protective oils that help to maintain moisture levels and prevent dehydration).
  • contain alcohol (destructive to the “acid mantel”, making skin, dry, thin, weak and vulnerable to environmental pollutants), or
  • have abrasive particles (this can cause tiny tears in the skin leaving it vulnerable to infections which can lead to blemishes and other problems).

Why organic?

  • Natural, botanical ingredients which form the basis of organic products are beneficial to the health and beauty of your skin.
  • Avoid exposing your skin to even more potential toxins, carcinogens and hormone disruptors found in most cleansers.
  • Supporting organic farming techniques has an benefit that goes far beyond what’s good for your skin, it also improves the water we drink and the air we breathe.

Organic Apoteke makes two certified organic facial cleansers. Which one is right for you?

If you have sensitive skin, eczema or your face feels tight or dry after cleansing: try the Buttermilk Cleanser

If you have normal skin/combination skin or your skin feels oily or has blemishes: try Active Face Cleanse Gel

Your skin is your largest organ, support its health and beauty by using an organic cleanser.
