Latest Research: DOES EXERCISING YOUR SKIN GUARANTEE RAPID WEIGHT LOSS?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

WeightlossFor centuries we have known that exercise is essential for good health – it gets the heart pumping and increases circulation. We know this is fact because after a 5 mile run our cheeks are glowing red and our heart rate is up. Improved circulation ensures that all the cells in our body get the nutrients and oxygen they need.

Organic Apoteke has developed products that also get the blood flowing to your cheeks without the 5 mile run. In fact this occurs while you sit on your couch for 15 minutes.

Organic Apoteke’s  innovative products stimulate microcirculation ensuring your skin gets as much blood flowing as you would from:

  • a 5 mile run
  • a 75 minute workout, or
  • a 2 hour hike.

The research shows that the Organic Apoteke products do not help with weight loss, but do ensure gorgeous, glowing skin.

Organic Eye Cream: Maintaining Healthy Eyes

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Like all parts of the body, the eyes need to be nourished properly. In addition to making sure the eyes are not strained by too much intense work or inadequate light or irritated by exposure to harsh cosmetic products and environmental toxins, proper eye care includes a healthy diet containing sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals.

Here are some tips to maintain healthy functional eyes:

Take a multivitamin and mineral complex with selenium of 200mcg daily as these destroy radicals that can damage the eye.

Vitamin A complex : 15000IU daily no t more than 10000IU if you are pregnant. Because the light absorbing retinal pigment is composed of vitamin A and protein, which are constantly being used up as images are formed, adequate supplies of these nutrients are vital for healty eye function.

Vitamin B complex containing 100mg of each B vitamin daily

Vitamin C with bioflavonoids 2000mg 3 times daily.

Vitamin E 200IU daily

Zinc 50mg daily. Do not exceed 100mg from all supplements daily.

Bilberry extract has been shown to improve both normal and night vision. Have it in tincture form or use and eye cream that contains bilberry.

Include the following in your diet: broccoli, raw cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, green vegetables, squash, sunflower seeds and watercress.

Drink fresh carrot juice which is high in Vitamin A. This can help alleviate some eye problems.

Eliminate sugar and white flour from your diet.

If you wear glasses, wear clear spectacle that have been treated to keep out UV rays. This will help protect against damage from UV exposure. Avoid wearing tinted glasses for this purpose, especially on a regular basis as dark glasses prevent the needed light from entering the eyes. The functioning of the pineal gland which plays an important role in the regulation of metabolism, behaviour and physiological functions, is largely governed by sunlight.

Never use hair dyes containing coal tar on the eyelashes or eyebrows. Doing so can cause injury or blindness. Although coal tar dyes are legal, marketing them for eyebrow or eyelash treatment is not.
Use only natural cosmetic products around your eyes. Products with harsh chemical ingredients can irritate and injure the eyes.

Mascaras, eyeliners and other eye makeup must be kept clean and changed regularly. Never use a mascara that is opened for more than 3 months. If these were at all contaminated with bacteria or other pathogens, you could infect your eye. Regularly wash make-up brushes that you use around your eyes.

The combination of nicotine, caffeine and sugar can cause visual disturbances. Reduce your intake of all 3.

READ YOUR FACE

READ YOUR FACE

Ancient Asian doctors knew that beauty problems were more than skin deep. Blemishes, discoloration, dry patches and hypopigmentation that show on your skin originate internally. The belief that beautiful skin begins with healthy blood and circulation is entrenched in Traditional Asian medicine. Hence traditionally trained Chinese and Indian doctors observe specific areas of the face to gauge internal health.
The following excerpt from “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” (an ancient Chinese medical text dating from 111CE) explains blemishes and flushing as signs of internal heat.
The symptom of the sickness of heat, when it is located in the liver, is that the left side of the jaw turns red. The symptom of the hot sickness when it is located in the heart is that the complexion (entire face) turns red. The symptom of the hot sickness when it is located in the spleen is that the nose first turns red. The symptom of hot sickness in the lungs is the right side of the jaw first turns red. The symptom of the hot sickness located in the kidneys is that the chin first turns red.
What the above text means by hot sickness is the excess of body heat. According to traditional Chinese medicine, some body heat or “internal fire” is essential to maintain a smooth flow of chi, essential for the functioning of various organs, including the liver, kidney, heart, lung and spleen.
But too much body heat can alter the chi, so that it harms these organs. Observing the skin closely enables Chinese practitioners to identify internal problems before they manifest as pathology.
The drawing above is a quick map to your internal organs*. Should you have blemishes, discoloration, redness or irritation on an area specific to an organ, follow our basic tips below to reduce internal heat. If symptoms persist please consult a qualified practitioner.
Add one of the following to your diet for at least one month.
Dandelion and honeysuckle flower tea – 1 cup every morning and evening
Burdock root supplements – follow the instructions on the bottle
Yellow dock supplements – follow the instructions on the bottle
Aloe vera juice – 1 glass per day or Aloe vera supplements – follow the instructions on the bottle

Reduce the following foods :
Tomatoes, pepper, cayenne, onion, garlic, ginger, chilli, sugar, pastries, oranges, pineapple, red meat, candy, honey, cinnamon, basil

Natural Skincare: Winter Skin Saviour – Natural, Organic Face Mask

Rejuvenating Face Mask - Certified organic, anti-aging face mask infused with natural peptides

Rejuvenating Face Mask - Certified organic, anti-aging face mask infused with natural peptides

According to Ayurvedic philosophy our bodies undergo changes as the seasons change. Autumn is more likely to cause a vata imbalance and in winter kapha imbalances are more pronounced. Needless to say our diets, lifestyle and skincare routines need to change in order to counter these imbalances.

Increased vata causes skin and all mucus membranes (in fact any part of the body exposed to the environment) to feel drier, tighter, itchy. As we progress into winter these symptoms become more pronounced. This results in dry, itchy throats with hacking cough. The body, if not assisted sets up its own mechanism to counteract this dryness by increasing mucus production. This increased mucus may cause a post nasal drip, collect in the sinuses or lungs and if conditions persist may become infected.

If we listen to our bodies and at the first sign of autumn and start taking the relevant precautions, many of the winter ails may never prevail. In autumn we need to decrease the amounts of salads and uncooked food and favour nutritious vegetable soups and broths brimming with nutrients. Have more nuts and seeds, as the vital essential fats in them, help nourish from inside out. And use high quality and effective natural skincare products to nourish from the outside in.

The natural skincare product you should not be without over the winter months is a Natural Face Mask. An organic, intensive and rejuvenating face mask is best.

  • Use one that is rich in nutritive oils and waxes such as Rosa damascena oil, coconut fat and shea butter.
  • It should also have a natural, rich emollient like pure, organic honey.
  • Choose a formulation that stimulates microcirculation, as circulation tends to become sluggish over the winter months.
  • Masks that have natural peptide complexes also give you great anti aging benefits.

You only need to use masks once or twice per week depending on your skin type and how effective and nourishing the organic face mask is. Ensure that you are maintaining your skins natural beauty with a good natural, organic skincare regime daily.

Dry Skin? How an Organic Facial Cleanser can Help.

Look for a gentle, nourishing, alcohol free cleanser, like Buttermilk Cleanser

Look for a gentle, nourishing, alcohol free cleanser, like Buttermilk Cleanser

If you have dry skin, the thought of a cleanser probably makes you cringe a little.  You wonder whether it’s going to make your skin feel dry and tight? We can sympathize, cleansers can often aggravate dry skin. Having said that, however, finding the right facial cleanser can help you re-hydrate dry skin and is the foundation of any good skin care practice.

A cleanser can do so much more than get the makeup and pollution of our faces, it can be the first step to rejuvenating dry skin by building the skin’s capacity to retain moisture.

Organic Apoteke has an organic facial cleanser that doesn’t merely wash away impurities.  It does so while nourishing the skin with antioxidants and removing dead and damaged cells so that your moisturizer can go deeper into the skin and begin to build healthy well nourished skin cells.

Yes, an advanced cleanser can really do all that, thanks to the following ingredients!

• Rose Oil: Improves circulation

• Buttermilk Powder: Removes dead and damaged skin cells

• Soy Oil: Combats free radical damage and provides protection and nourishment

Note: avoid all alcohol in your skin care regime and be sure to always follow your cleansing with a nourishing toner and moisturizer.

Natural Skincare | Harness the Anti Aging Power of Herbs

Friday, October 30th, 2009

It is not easy to draw a dividing line between therapeutic herbs and nutrition. Many plants we eat as food have quite strong actions on the body. Chillies cause some people problems (heartburn), yet others crave them daily as they cause endorphin (happy hormone) release. Even tea and coffee can have very strong effects. Coffee with its high caffeine content wakes you up and may give you a boost of much needed energy whereas camomile tea may help you relax when stressed. We are all affected by the plants and herbs that we consume.

However when you use specific herbs and plants in correct quantities in skincare, you can harness them to have the most amazing results. Just look at these two examples:

  • A combination of lemon, grapefuit and arginine (amino acid) extracted from wheat can reduce sebum production, keeping skin healthy and matte.
  • A combination of rose oil, rosehip seed oil and amino acids extracted from beets and maize can have the most amazing skin firming and wrinkle- reducing results due to the anti-oxidants, nutrients and protein stimulating effects of the ingredients that work synergistically.

We know that natural, organic products are safe because most people in the world eat a range of plants every day. Our bodies are used to consuming them, absorbing what is beneficial to us and getting rid of the waste by-products. Given that there are millions of biochemical processes going on in our bodies all the time and that there are millions of substances in plants, it is only natural that many plants have constituents that have an effect on how our bodies work.

It’s important, however, to remember that some people are allergic to specific ingredients even if they are natural. So please do ensure that natural skincare products don’t contain plant material that you may be sensitive to.

Organic Apoteke produces a range of natural, organic skincare products including an anti aging skin care range.  All ingredients are from natural botanical and mineral sources.

How to find the Right Organic Facial Cleanser

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

CleanseWhy is a facial cleanser so important?
Consider the fact that the skin on your face is quite delicate, then think of everything it is subjected to: air pollution, chlorine (in most tap water), and the toxins from a variety of personal care products. All of these put a strain on the skin’s natural detoxification process. Our skin needs the support of a good facial cleanser to wash away impurities and stay balanced, healthy and beautiful.

How to choose the right cleanser for your skin?
Everyone’s skin is slightly different due to our genetics, our diet, our environment, and our hormone levels. Using the right cleanser for your current skin condition is a vital step in achieving luminous skin. Here are a few questions that will help you determine what your skin needs.

  • Does your skin feel tight after washing? The face wash or cleanser you are using is too dehydrating for your skin. You need to find a gentle cleanser. Look for ingredients such as rose oil, soy oil or shea butter (to nourish and protect your skin while cleansing).
  • Does your face feel oily 15 minutes after washing? You could be using the wrong cleanser, there are two possibilities: Your cleanser is too rich and not able to remove the excess sebum your skin is producing, or your cleanser is too harsh (drying) causing a your skin to produce excess oil. Look for ingredients such as arginine, and lemon oil which balance oiliness.
  • Is your skin dull after cleansing? You need a face wash or cleanser that gently exfoliates (no scrubbing please)! Look for ingredients such as pineapple enzymes, papaya enzymes or lactic acid (from organic dairy sources) to help remove dead and damaged skin cells revealing newer skin cells.
  • Does your skin have blemishes despite regular cleansing? Look for ingredients such as neem leaf extract and tea tree oil which are naturally antibacterial (also make sure you change your washcloth daily).

A fine balance
You might have to scrub other things to get them clean, but don’t take this approach with your skin. Be very gentle. Your skin has a protective “acid mantle” which  should be maintained, or restored (when needed) by using the right cleanser. You never want your cleanser to:

  • be harsh (avoid sodium laurel sulfate or other harsh surfactants), this can strip your skin of the protective oils that help to maintain moisture levels and prevent dehydration).
  • contain alcohol (destructive to the “acid mantel”, making skin, dry, thin, weak and vulnerable to environmental pollutants), or
  • have abrasive particles (this can cause tiny tears in the skin leaving it vulnerable to infections which can lead to blemishes and other problems).

Why organic?

  • Natural, botanical ingredients which form the basis of organic products are beneficial to the health and beauty of your skin.
  • Avoid exposing your skin to even more potential toxins, carcinogens and hormone disruptors found in most cleansers.
  • Supporting organic farming techniques has an benefit that goes far beyond what’s good for your skin, it also improves the water we drink and the air we breathe.

Organic Apoteke makes two certified organic facial cleansers. Which one is right for you?

If you have sensitive skin, eczema or your face feels tight or dry after cleansing: try the Buttermilk Cleanser

If you have normal skin/combination skin or your skin feels oily or has blemishes: try Active Face Cleanse Gel

Your skin is your largest organ, support its health and beauty by using an organic cleanser.

Wrinkle Reduction and Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips

Collagen Chain: Gives skin its structure and stability

Collagen Chain: Gives skin its structure and stability

Why does skin start to look less radiant, dryer and more lined as we age? What are the causes?

As we grow older the subcutaneous fatty layer that lies under the skin becomes thinner, we often notice this in teenagers when we say they have lost their puppy fat. As we grow older we lose more and more of the fatty layer which nourishes the skin.  Skin cells in youth are tightly packed together, but due to environmental and dietary effects as we age, the spaces between cells can become larger; larger spaces increases water loss through the skin, something known as TEWL (Tran Epidermal Water Loss). TEWL is aggravated by skincare products that contain high amounts of alcohol; alcohol is a great steriliser, but increases water loss.

Furthermore collagen and elastin in the dermal layer of the skin starts to break down because the body absorbs less of this from our diet as we age. All of the above conditions cause the skin to appear less radiant more lined and dehydrated.

What are the appropriate skincare products to use to help these 3 areas? Here’s what you should be looking for, illustrated by a selection from our own range of all-natural products:

  • Deep moisturising with alcohol free products will help prevent dryness and skin will appear more radiant. Alcohol dehydrates the superficial skin cells, thus causing them to become less plump; this increases the spaces between them allowing essential water (moisture) to be lost and also toxic ingredients to enter. Organic Apoteke products are alcohol free.
  • Gentle exfoliating with a mild abrasive-free cleanser will get rid of dead skin cells; hence skin will appear more radiant.
  • Using a skin firming, anti-oxidant rich serum will help reduce the appearance of lines.

What ingredients should you be looking for to tackle these 3 areas?

A hugely important factor is how easily the treatment is absorbed into the skin. Oil and wax based products are not easily absorbed and just lay on the surface of the skin. It is a common misconception that anti-aging skin care products need to be thick, rich and oily to nourish the skin; they actually have to be light and easily absorbed, so they reach the parts of the skin that need it.

Ingredients good for smoothing lines and wrinkles:

Summary

Look for products and treatments that don’t themselves add problems – alcohol-free products and treatments are good.

Look for light, penetrating cosmetics, not thick waxy treatments.
