Skin loses some of its elasticity with age, and muscles within the eyelids lose tone causing what is known as bags under the eyes or puffiness. In addition fat can build up in the eyelid and fluids can accumulate and cause swelling. Puffiness around the eyes can also be caused by allergies or excessive salt consumption. Smoking as well can aggravate this problem.
Here are a few quick tips to help reduce under eye bags or puffiness.
Avoid drinking fluids before bed.
Avoid monosodium glutamate and reduce your salt intake.
Do not smoke and reduce second hand smoke.
Get plenty of sleep
Apply a chilled gel compress or a washcloth soaked in iced water over the eyes. Cold cucumber slices also work. The cold shrinks the swollen blood vessels.
For long term prevention, use eye creams that strengthen the skin and help build the collagen and elastin around the eye area. Eye creams containing bilberry help strengthen the blood vessels and tone veins which prevent puffiness.

Organic Eye Cream for Men
Since the post “Organic Eye Cream : When should you start using an eye cream?” went out yesterday, we have had a flurry of emails with questions and many of these came from men.
In response:
While men do tend to have thicker facial skin with a higher density of sebaceous glands, the skin around their eyes is thin. Therefore men do need to use an eye cream twice daily, morning and evening from as early as possible. If you start in your teenage years its best, but its never too late to prevent further damage.
Because men have thicker skin on their face, they tend not to develop the fine lines that women do. This makes it all the more important to use a good organic eye cream as the area around the eyes is generally the first area where lines and wrinkles develop.

One question I get asked very often by younger customers is “when should they start using an eye cream?”. There seems to be a misconception that you only need to use and eye cream in your thirties or when the first fine lines begin to appear. The answer is, at that stage its already a bit late. The skin around the eyes is extremely thin and it also does not have the benefit of underlying muscle to hold it taught. Hence it needs all the help it can get. You need to use an eye cream from as early as possible. Choose a good organic eye cream that is nourishing but light in consistency. Thick and heavy eye creams can do more damage than good in this delicate area.

You may have observed how frequently our concept of age needs readjustment. Just found a great paper by Hayslip and Panek (1993) who categorise age in a number of different ways.
Chronological Age:
The length of time since birth which forms the basis of many peoples views on how ‘young’ or ‘old’ they are. But this can be contrasted with biological age.
Biological Age:
This is the physical age of ones body. If a healthy diet and exercise is maintained, body organs and processes may appear to be those of a much younger chronological age. The opposite also applies.
Social Age:
This is defined by the habits, behaviours, interests and attitudes of a person. People in their sixties may share the attitudes and interests of their children and identify with people with chronological ages of 20 to 30. Ever heard the expression ‘young at heart’. Act young, be young.
Psychological Age:
This refers to our adaptive behaviours and the way we cope with situations. If you do not become fixed in your attitudes and are able to change and adapt to different situations your psychological age may be that of an adventurous twenty something.
Trying to describe age is subjective. Hence the concept of functional age has come into favour. Functional age is obtained by measuring performance on the above four ranges. This is a useful way of thinking about age as it defines us in our actual ability rather than how long we have been alive.
Can you calculate your functional age? The good thing with this, is you can take steps to improve it. Lets share some ideas on how to improve functional age. Using great, natural or herbal skin care products definitely fits into that plan.

It is the constituents found in herbs or plants that give them their main actions and make herbal skin care effective. Here is a brief introduction to an important plant constituent, the sugars.
Sugars
Everyone is familiar with this. It is commercially extracted from sugar cane and sugar beet. There are small amounts of sugars in almost all leaves as they are manufactured in this part of the plant. Sugars are also stored in the roots of many herbs such as liquorice whose botanical name Glycyrrhiza means “sugar root”.
Some sugar related plant constituents called glycosides have very useful and wide ranging actions. A glycoside has a sugar part joined to different part that is usually responsible for its therapeutic action. The non-sugar parts vary enormously in structure and action. One example is lily of the valley. This plant has several glycosides that help to strengthen the heart muscle. It is actually the non-sugar parts that do this job, but the sugar parts help their initial absorption into the body and heart muscle. Glycosides are used for two reasons in natural skincare, they help get other vital ingredients absorbed into the skin and they also are used to hydrate the skin by binding onto water molecules.

Researchers from Japan’s Josai University, have published exciting research about animal testing alternatives in Pharmacetical Research Journal November 2009 [PMID: 19904581] GOOD NEWS!. Their conclusion:
Ingredient concentration in skin can be precisely predicted using a silicone membrane
